Luke Falk: Life, Football & Why Mindset Matters. CougsFirst! Podcast Episode 12
The CougsFirst! Podcast is back and this time we spoke with former WSU quarterback Luke Falk about his time at Washington State University and the parallels between life, football, and why mindset matters.
"You’ve gotta believe in yourself."
Luke Falk's athletic journey has not been an easy one. In this episode, he talks about how mindset can shape your future for better or worse, and how it prepared him for the challenges that lay ahead. It's a story of resilience and perseverance, but one that can be encapsulated in a single phrase: "You’ve gotta believe in yourself."
Luke spent time with one of his most admired coaches at Washington State University—Mike Leach — who opened up new worlds of knowledge for him as both a player and person. He credits Leach with teaching him so much about football but also life itself; he taught him how to take control of his own destiny through hard work and preparation.
It wasn't always easy for Luke though; he lost games during his senior season due to injury and had several people question whether he would make it into professional sports after college. But now that he has made it through those dark times there's no doubt in his mind that all those setbacks made him stronger than ever before!
"Just because you have past success doesn't guarantee you're going to have future success."
It's a good thing to realize that success isn't guaranteed. You need to figure out what works for you and do it every day. That's the only way you're going to be successful in the long run, because if you don't do something on a consistent basis over time, then it won't work out for you.
You need to be clear about what you want, and then take consistent action toward that goal. If you don't do that, then it's going to be hard for you to achieve success.
"When I was a walk-on, I appreciated everything. And when I got to the pros, I took the little things for granted."
The key to success is to have a walk-on mentality and stay hungry and humble. Because no matter how good we are at what we do, there will always be someone better than us out there waiting for his chance if we ever fall off our game or lose focus on what really matters: working hard and doing what needs to be done in order for our dreams come true.
“My one word to describe my time at WSU is: Dream”
It's a dream. It's been an incredible journey to be part of this community, the people around me, and my family. All the experiences—the good and bad—it's all been worth it because of what I've learned about myself along the way.
